What is Reverse Osmosis?

So, what is the difference between carbon filters and reverse osmosis? Essentially, reverse osmosis is a membrane technology that uses a first thin-film composite membrane (or TFC) in order to force the water over a second semi-permeable membrane. In other words, the water is pushed through another sieve-like texture.

The APEC ROES-50 is a truly comprehensive water filter system that can remove up to 99% of contaminants and uses five different stages to ensure water is pure, refreshing and clean.

The APEC ROES-50 uses a different membrane as compared with the 90 series. Nevertheless, this unit is still highly capable of creating ultra-pure and delicious drinking water. It can remove the following:

Disadvantages

This is not APEC’s most powerful water filter. For that you will need any of the RO-90 models which provide a more thorough and efficient clean. Nevertheless, 90-GDP should be more than enough for most homes.

Note as well that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that acid water can have any effect on the acidity of the body or the blood as some people claim. If you are looking at investing in this unit for that reason, then think again and consider instead spending your money on a higher GDP.

Verdict

This unit is an effective and powerful water filter with added calcium carbonate. If your water is especially acidic, then that might be a good fit for your home.

Disadvantages

This is a highly capable machine with a very useful extra stage that can take your cleanliness even further. The main disadvantage is that the membrane is not the most thorough from APEC and it’s a shame that there is not a product that matches 90-GDP with the disinfectant UV.

APEC RO-PH90 – Ultimate Series Alkaline Mineral 90 GPD 6-Stage Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System

Introduction – Function

As the name might suggest, this is essentially the same RO-90 water filter, except now with the additional ability to make water more alkaline. This works using a mineralizing calcium filter in order to increase the pH level.

Like the PH90 itself, this is an incredibly comprehensive water filter. It goes through the very same five stages and then simply adds a sixth stage in order to increase water pH.

After this, the water is polished using coconut shell refining carbon and then has calcium carbonate added to increase water alkalinity.

Advantages

Reducing the acidity of your water may help to prevent corrosion of your appliances and kitchen fittings, as well as preventing damage to your teeth.

Meanwhile, you will get to benefit from all the usual advantages of an APEC water filter – meaning that your water will be as free as possible from contaminants and toxins and essentially as close to drinking bottled water as it gets!

Disadvantages

There are few disadvantages for the PH90 range of devices. However, some users do find that installation can be a somewhat tricky experience and that it might take up to 6 hours. Some report that they had to buy additional parts in order to get it up and running.

Another consideration is that alkalizing your water may not be necessary and this is not something that everyone should look for. There is no evidence that acidic water can alter your blood pH or that it can in any way be bad for your diet… despite claims from certain diet fads!

That said, acidic water can be bad for your skin and increase the likelihood of acne and even infection by damaging the skin barrier. Not only that, but it has other downsides as mentioned.

Verdict

This is a great choice if you know your water to be particularly acidic and if you are experiencing problems as a result. However, know that ‘acidic’ does not mean ‘bad’ and that you should be aiming for water anywhere from 6.5 to 8.5.

If your water is already within that range, then you can save some money by going with the standard P90… which is an excellent filtration system.

APEC RO-PERM – Ultimate Series Permeate Pumped Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System – For Low Pressure Homes

Introduction – Function

Once again, the clue as to this devices purpose is hidden in plain sight. As the name tells us, this is a reverse osmosis system that is designed specifically for homes with low pressure. This means that you can still enjoy all the same water filtration benefits, even if your property struggles to get water out of the taps around the building normally!

RO-PERM is designed specifically for those low-pressure homes, which encompasses any property that falls within the 30-50PSI range.

Other than that, you are getting the usual filtration systems that we’ve seen in the PH90. The RO-PERM is guaranteed to remove: arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, lead, rhodium and selenium – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

How it Works

This will get around the issue of low-pressure by using a non-electric pump to boost performance. The pump will fill the tank faster and fuller and this in turn will increase the flow rate at the faucet.

The filter meanwhile goes through five stages just like the R90. These stages first remove sediment from the water to prevent it damaging the delicate membrane. From there, carbon blocks are used to filter the water and then the FILMTEC High Rejection TFC reverse osmosis membrane is called into action. The end result is that 99% of the contaminants are removed.

Advantages

This is a fantastic water filter, just like the previous models we’ve seen from APEC so far. Like those systems, it will remove a huge proportion of contaminants for healthier and tastier drinking water. It also uses industry standard parts and is generally simple enough to prevent breakdowns from being likely or occurring regularly.

Another big advantage is that the permeate pump has an added bonus of preventing waste water and making for a more eco-friendly and efficient system!

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage with these systems is a minor one: installation can be a little complex for some.

The other point to keep in mind is that you are paying extra for a low-pressure system. If your property does not have this issue, then you may wish to stick with the basic P90.

One more consideration is that for those with extremely low pressure, or no pressure at all, the RO-PUMP may be even more appropriate.

Verdict

Overall, this is an excellent filter system just like its contemporaries with added efficiency and more practicality for those with low water pressure.

APEC RO-PUMP – Electric Pumped Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System For International Use

Introduction – Function

This is another water filter that works using a reverse osmosis system and which will ensure that the water coming from your taps is perfectly drinkable and free from any contaminants. The difference with this model is that it is designed to operate on extremely low pressure or even no pressure at all. This makes it suitable for use in some international markets where similar devices otherwise would not be possible.

Key Features

Like all of the APEC water filters we have looked at so far, the RO-PUMP works by using a membrane as a filter. The water is pushed through this membrane and that process is enough to remove contaminants that are almost impossibly tiny.

At the same time, the system also uses carbon blocks, as well as a separate stage to remove sediment that could otherwise damage the membranes.

The big difference here, is that the system also uses an electric pump capable of operating at low water pressure of 0-30psi.

How it Works

The booster pump is a high flow, quiet booster pump that has an electric automatic tank shut off. Otherwise, the system works much like the others we’ve looked at so far.

Advantages

With the RO-PUMP, you’ll get all the usual benefits you’re used to having read this far. That means you can enjoy water that is free of 99% of all contaminants and you can drink water that is absolutely crystal clear and tastes just like bottled water. And now, thanks to the booster pump, this can now be enjoyed in homes with very low pressure or not pressure at all.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages are the same as those we’ve discussed for other systems. Installation can be a little lengthy for those that aren’t familiar with these systems, and the low-pressure functionality won’t be useful for homes that don’t have any issue with their pressure.

Verdict

Overall, this is another great filter from APEC that once again has a specific, intended purpose.

For the most powerful machines, you should look for the Ultimate or Essence series.

Advantages

This is a great option for those that want to benefit from powerful RO filters but don’t want to limit themselves to just one tap. This can be used anywhere in the house or even brought on trips and it will offer all of the same health benefits as the larger units. There are surprisingly few compromises here – even the total gallons per day is the same (90).

Oh, and if you were put off by the potentially lengthy installation of the RO-90 and co, then this option should help to put that concern to rest.

Disadvantages
